You set a passphrase
An AES-256 encryption key is derived using PBKDF2 with 600,000 iterations. This key never leaves your browser.
Bookmarks are encrypted locally
Your entire bookmark collection is encrypted with AES-256-GCM before being sent to our server. We receive an opaque blob of bytes.
Other browsers decrypt with same passphrase
Install the extension on another browser, enter the same passphrase, and your bookmarks appear. We were never able to read them.
Abigail is a free app that runs on your own machine and remembers things for you. Install her and TabbJam stops being just sync: search your bookmarks by meaning, not keywords — "everything about TypeScript" finds the right links even when that word never appears. She answers only on your machine, and the browser extension is the only way in, so tabbjam.com never sees what she knows. This is the part no cloud bookmark service can copy.
